As we all know that it's obvious we are gradually nearing the period of torrential rainfall in Lagos State and in consonance with the axiom that cleanliness is next to godliness which is the impetus propelling, the Agege Local Government Authority under the Leadership of Alhaji, High Chief Ganiyu Kola Egunjobi as a proactive government at the grassroots has embarked on a de-flooding exercise(s) which has been designed to be executed in batches, ensuring that Agege environment is not only clean and healthy for a living but serve as a threat to flooding, cholera and other epidemic outbreak.
The Council Boss in his desire to ensure that Agege environs are clean and healthy for living, waste no time in hitting the ground running by flagging off "OPERATION CLEAN UP AGEGE" as a proactive mechanism to combat perennial flooding, dirty environment and also to create awareness and enforcement of sanitation laws which in no immeasurable way will yield a desirable result in maintaining a clean environment in Agege.
Yesterday, May 26, 2022, the Council Supervisor for Environment, Special Adviser on Environment and Head of Department Environmental Services and Waste Management , took the batching exercise to Oniwaya/Humani street with the personnel of the Environmental Health and Waste Management personnel where desilting and immediate carting away of resultant refuse, silt and waste along the environs was carried out.
Also, the flooded areas around Oke-Koto and Alfa Nla community was inspected to know the challenges and lasting solutions to the flash flood they experience.
The Head of Department, San. Taiwo Awonuga while inspecting the progress of the de-flooding exercise implored of the Local Council, most especially those in the water logged areas to ensure that drainages and channels are free to avoid any hindrance which may result to flooding when torrential rain commences.
Further, he advised that any erring resident should be reported instantly to the Local Government for necessary sanction as failure to do this could spell doom for all residents if the drainages get blocked and waste water and storm water could not flow freely.
The Supervisor, Hon Akin Oke reiterated that the Local Government won't hesitate in embarking on the repairing of some culverts, drainages and channels in the affected areas so as to have free channel drainage system that allows free flow of water before, during and after the rainy season.
Mr. Olayiwola Rasheed Emmanuel, the Special Adviser on Environment reiterated that constant routine check on drainages through which de-silt and carting away of waste is done, is an unwavering commitment and the Local Government has for a clean environment which goes beyond just lip service.
The Department of the Environmental services will continue to be effective in deploying swift mechanism and strategy in preventing much environmental havoc in the Local Government by sensitizing the residents on sanitation procedures and enforcing the sanitation laws on defaulters, because ensuring a cleaner and healthier aesthetic environment is our collective responsibilities. Hence, let's put a stop to indiscriminate dumping of refuses and sewages into the drainage system and think of the consequences of blocked drainages by our actions", he stressed.
